The Dayton community was horrified in March 2011 when a disabled 14-year-old girl died from extreme neglect. The girl - who suffered from cerebral palsy and needed to eat via a feeding tube - weighed a sickening 28 pounds at the time of her death.
Dayton authorities arrested four people in the abuse and neglect case, including three nurses and the victim's own mother, Angela Norman. Yesterday, a Montgomery County judge sentenced Norman to nine years in prison for the wrongful death of her child.

A 25-year-old Camden motorcyclist was killed on May 2 when a teen driver pulled out in front of him in Hamilton. The biker was gravely injured in the crash and died at University Hospital several hours later.
The 17-year-old motorist shouldn't have even been driving because of a suspended license. The teen faces charges of vehicular homicide, failure to yield at a stop sign and driving with a suspended license. The driver's parents face criminal charges, too, for allowing their child to illegally drive their pickup truck.

Between 2009 and 2011, distracted driving accidents killed 74 people in Ohio. The death toll is particularly troubling because motorists - particularly teens - are aware of the dangers of texting while driving, but many choose to do it regardless.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) polled drivers about their use of cellphones while driving. The survey found that motorists ages 18 through 20 are three times more likely to view or send text messages than drivers older than 25. Whether it's a difference in maturity or a lifestyle, it appears that teens and young 20-somethings are not practicing safe driving as well as fellow drivers just a few years older.

The Kids Learning Place in Piqua recently held a memorial to honor the memory of Malisa Delasancha. The girl, 4, died at Dayton Children's Medical Center after suffering head injuries from alleged child abuse. As part of its ceremony, the learning center planted a tree on its grounds to help students and staff remember the joyful child.
On April 12, police received a call from a 21-year-old man who said the child had accidentally fallen down the stairs. Medics arrived to find Malisa barely alive and rushed her to the hospital. Tragically, she died two days later. The man who made the 911 call, Travis Gauldin, has been criminally charged in the girl's death.

That rough-looking biker you saw on the highway earlier this week needs your help. Yes, it may look like that 6-foot-something man with the 7-inch beard is tough enough to eat shards of glass for breakfast, but remember that he's extremely vulnerable while cruising Ohio's highways. If a negligent motorist cuts him off or fails to respect his equal right to the road, he can die within seconds of a motorcycle accident.
Please participate in Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month by keeping an eye out for motorcyclists this May. Motorcycle ridership is way up; chances are you know a family member, friend or neighbor who rides a motorcycle. Not only are motorcycles soaring in popularity, many new riders are breaking the mold of the "traditional" biker.

In September, we discussed a fatal, single-car accident on Needmore Road. The crash killed an 18-year-old Dayton man and seriously injured three other young people. The car accident made headlines last fall, but the story has re-emerged after a video of a fistfight was recently uploaded to YouTube.com.
The video shows several men landing vicious punches on Jonathan Bullock - the driver in the September crash. Bullock, 20, was violently targeted by friends of the deceased teen at Xenia's Kil-Kare Speedway on April 19. Two men in the video are facing assault charges for their attack on Bullock.

Local and state officials are searching for answers as to why six people died on the same stretch of U.S. Route 127 during the past several weeks. In the meantime, the Mercer County Sheriff's Department and the Ohio State Highway Patrol are increasing their presence on the road, hoping that their added visibility encourages people to drive safely.
Authorities are considering adding rumble strips to the center line of Route 127. Two recent fatal accidents in Mercer County involved a vehicle crossing left of center. It's pure speculation that rumble strips could have prevented either collision, but adding safety features to the highway certainly couldn't do any harm.

Tragic news shook the Clinton community on Saturday afternoon when residents learned that an East Clinton High School senior had died in a car crash on Ohio State Route 72.
The victim, of Sabina, was driving her 1992 Lexus ES 300 north when she failed to negotiate a curve. Her car left the roadway and entered a ditch before rolling multiple times. The 17-year-old driver was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected during the rollover accident. She was rushed to Dayton's Miami Valley Hospital, but could not survive her serious injuries.

A woman recently succumbed to head injuries she suffered on the Pennsylvania Turnpike last week. Fatal highway accidents are far too common, but this wrongful death was particularly tragic because of the bizarre circumstances involved.
A 31-year-old woman was traveling on the turnpike when a truck in front of her struck a road sign. The traffic sign flew upward and then through the woman's windshield, striking her head. She was rushed to the hospital with severe head injuries, but died two days later.

Gary Lanoue was a dedicated cyclist with decades of riding experience, so his family had plenty of questions after a police officer spotted Lanoue's lifeless body on the side of the road. Lanoue's body showed signs of trauma, but no evidence hinted that a motorist had been involved in the man's fatal bicycle accident.
Puzzled, the police continued analyzing the evidence and later found the likely culprit: a fatal defect in the man's bicycle. Authorities believe that the victim's Cervelo Soloist bike had a defective fork, causing the front of the bike to suddenly break apart. The bicycle defect caused Lanoue to crash face-first into the concrete while traveling at a significant speed.
